Xanthorrhoea glauca -'Black Boy'
These wonderful plants are unique to the continent of Australia. Their survival from bush fires gives rise to the politically incorrect name 'Black Boy' with its thick blackened burnt trunks topped by a dense grassy clump of leaves. They are and extremely slow growing plant where it is estimated that the trunks grow approximately 1cm of trunk a year in their native habitat. I would say that is a bit on the generous side for plants growing in Ireland. Having said that once the roots have been re-established you will see a considerable amount of new grass emerging. I've had one out doors for the past 6 years without any problems and it is growing well. However these plants cannot be guaranteed out doors to be fully hardy, "Caveat emptor"! Xanthorrhoea glauca are allegedly hardy down to -6°c but have a definite dislike to the wet and damp of winters in Ireland. If planting outdoors, plant in a sunny position, (although Grass Trees will also thrive in semi-shade) in free draining soil. Should the soil not be free draining dig a large hole, mix in some horticultural grit and JI Number 3 and plant in a slightly raised position to aid drainage off the plant. Alternatively plant on as above in a pot whereby you can leave out for most the year and bring inside for the winter period. It needs frequent watering after being planted at the base of the plant only. Never water through the head as this can lead to rotting of the plant. As from 2006 the Australian Government will prohibit the export of all the Xanthorrhoea Grass Tree species as they have classified the plant as a Rare & Endangered species. Each individual plant that I have on offer for sale is tagged under a licence issued by the Australian Department of Environment. I have approximately 40 plants left for sale and then they will be no more! Please note plants sold are fully rooted and have been in my care for over a year. Sold plants cannot be returned.
