Polystichum vestitum - Prickly Shield Fern

Origin: New Zealand

Evergreen fern with dark rich green bipinnate fronds with distinctive brown scales covering the stipe. Allegedly fronds will reach up to 3 foot, but this has not been my experience to date with a maximum of 1 foot achieved on plants in my garden.
This is one of the more cold tolerant of the New Zealand ferns and also seems to handle strong winds as well. This is a suitable fern for an open position in the garden.
As it's common names suggests the fronds are prickly to touch.
