Polystichum proliferum - Mother Shield Fern
This is a fully hardy evergreen ground fern. It grows from a central rhizome with bipinnate fronds that are a wonderful dark green that can on mature plants grow up to 3 foot. Another fern with black shiny scales on the stipe. Plantlets are produced at the tips of the fronds that, after taking root, enable the colony to expand. This is a very suitable fern to grow with tree ferns as it does so in its native habitat in southeast Australia. With age the fern will develop a small trunk-like base. I have got a few in my garden and they look great 12 months of the year and the only maintenance needed is to remove dead fronds from the base periodically.
