Butia capitata - Jelly Palm
This feather-leafed palm is South American in its origin. It is a very graceful plant with pinnate curved, silvery green leaves. It is both drought tolerant and cold hardy. Preferably plant in a sunny location but it is quite adaptable. Being the hardiest of the feather-leafed palms it is therefore suitable to most parts of Ireland. I have one growing in my garden for 5 years now and it is growing very well. But like all palms that are going to grow in Ireland growth will be slow due to the lack of summer heat! The secret to the success of palms is in the correct planting and positioning to give your plant every chance of growing well. Like most palms, it must be planted in a free draining soil to ensure it doesn't rot due to the winter wet conditions. The aspect is also important to ensure it receives enough sun for summer growth. |
