Blechnum novae-zelandiae - Gully Fern

Blechnum novae-zelandiae Gully Fern ground new zealand evergreen
Origin: New Zealand

This is a great fern. This is a must for me, with its juvenile growth a soft red, then they turn a light green before maturing to a dark green and eventually the fronds will blacken off and die back. It has pinnate fronds of around 2 feet (in my garden but will get much bigger in time).

This is a very easy fern to cultivate, tolerating a wide range of conditions, but doing best in light shade and moist soils. In time it will spread into a large clump by underground rhizomes.

It will also take full sun but the frond size will not be as large as a result.
